Globalgreenhousegasreductioninpaperindustryrequiresdiversestrategies:study_GuangmingOnlineBEIJING,Dec.25(Xinhua)--Agroupofresearchershaveassessedthenetglobalgreenhousegas(GHG)emissionsofdomesticpaper-relatedindustriesacross30majorcountriesfrom1961to2019andfoundsignificantdifferencesintermsofhistoricalemissionevolutiontrendsandstructuresinthesecountries,accordingtoarecentstudypublishedinthejournalNature.ThepulpandpaperindustryisanimportantcontributortoGHGemissions.Country-specificstrategiesareessentialfortheindustrytoachievenet-zeroemissionsby2050,givenitsvastheterogeneitiesacrosscountries,thestudynoted.ResearchersfromtheDepartmentofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineeringofFudanUniversitycooperatedwithinternationalpartnerstosetupagreenhousegasemissionsdatasetconcerningthepaperindustryandproposedastrategytoreachnet-zeroemissionby2050,whichtookintoaccountthelocalconditionsofcountries.Theresearchshowedthattheglobalpaperindustryhademitted43.5billiontonnesofcarbondioxideequivalentofgreenhousegasesfrom1961to2019.Netgreenhousegasemissionsofthepaperindustrygloballyshowedatendencytorisefirstandthendeclineorstabilize.Allcountriesareexpectedtoachievenet-zeroemissionsfortheirpulpandpaperindustriesby2050,withasinglemeasureusedformostdevelopedcountriesandmultiplemeasuresemployedforthemajorityofdevelopingcountries,accordingtothestudy.Theresultsofscenarioanalysisshowedthatimprovementsinbothenergystructuresandenergyefficiencyareeffectivemeasurestoreduceemissions,andwhichcanachieveaverageemissionreductionsof64percentand41percent,respectively,acrossthe30countriesstudied.Editor:DisclaimerTheviewsandopinionsexpressedinthisarticlearethoseoftheauthor's,GMW.cnmakesnorepresentationsastoaccuracy,suitability,orvalidityofanyinformationonthissiteandwillnotbeliableforanyerrors,omissions,ordelaysinthisinformation.
